You sometimes find the term: “born again” in the Bible but it is a mistranslation. The word “begotten” is a more accurate translation. Take for example first Peter chapter one. In 1 Pet. 1: 23 we read: “Being born again not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible [the Holy Spirit] by the word of God which liveth and abideth forever”. But notice that in 1 Pet. 1: 3 we read: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ which according to his abundant mercy have begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead”. It is essential that we understand what that text (1 Pet. 1: 3) is saying if we are to fully comprehend what the scriptures are saying. Scripture is telling us that

we are begotten again (a second time) by the Spirit of God with the lively hope that just as Christ became the Son of God by a resurrection so also we too are to be sons of God by resurrection from the dead. The Greek word in the text translated as “Born” is “an-ag-en-nah-o” and it means: to Bear or to carry. Did you get that?

In the context of a person being begotten it obviously means: to carry in the womb. A begotten child is one whose life has started in the womb - being carried in the womb – but not yet born. See the same example again in 1 John 5:1 4.

The scriptures say in John 1: 12: “But as many as received him [Christ] to them gave he power (the Holy Spirit) to become the sons of God even to them that believe on his name”. Yes if we have the Holy Spirit we are now “begotten sons” of God soon to become literal sons of God born into God’s family by a resurrection from the dead! Do you know that Christ himself called us gods (John 10: 34. Psalms 82: 6 7)? Remember that God is the family name (Eph. 3: 15). Yes folks this is that mystery of the great human potential.
