Christ was physically of the lineage of David (Luke 1: 31 32). He was also a begotten Son of God by the fact that He was conceived by the Holy Spirit of God (Luke 1: 35) - Not yet fully born but begotten Son of God. At His resurrection from the dead He became “born again” as a fully born Son of God! In John 3: 16 we read: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son ...”. Notice that Christ was at that time God’s only begotten Son because until His death and resurrection He was the only one who had been begotten by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was simply not even available to man (John 7: 38 39) except God’s prophets. They had the Holy Spirit in them (1 Pet1: 11). The Holy Spirit is referred to as “the seed” of God (1 john 3: 9) and it is the seed by which Christ was begotten in Mary his mother (Luke 1: 35).

Christ said to His disciples: “Even the Spirit of truth (Holy Spirit); whom the world cannot receive because it seeth him not neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you and shall (future) be in you” (John 14: 17). Yes folks the world in general simply “cannot receive” the Holy Spirit except by the will of God! You must be called by God and after repentance and baptism one receives the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit dwelt with the disciples until the death and resurrection of Christ (John 7: 39) after which It began to dwell in them as first occurred on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2: 1 – 4).

Christ is no-longer the only begotten Son of God. The truly converted Christian who has the Holy Spirit (the seed of God) dwelling in him/her is now begotten by God and is a begotten son/daughter of God. Read it in Rom 8: 15 – 16 Gal. 4: 6 7.

In Heb. 1: 5 6. Speaking of Christ we read: “For unto which of the angels said he (God) at any time Thou art my Son this day have I begotten thee? And again I will be to him a Father and he shall be to me a son? And again when he bringeth the first begotten [Christ] into the world he saith and let all the angels of God worship him”. There you have it! Christ was the first begotten Son of God. If there is a “first begotten” then there is obviously a second. The Holy Spirit is the power of God by which Christ was raised up from the dead thus becoming fully born-again as Son of God by a resurrection (Rom 1: 4). That is what Christ was speaking about when He told Nicodemus one must be born again to see and to enter the Kingdom of God. When the Bible refers to the righteous as “sons of God” it means just like Christ we are only “begotten” sons yet to be born-again at the resurrection of the saints. We read in Rom. 8: 9: “But ye (the Christian) are not in the flesh [walk after the flesh] but in the Spirit [walk after the Spirit] if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ (God) he is none of his”. If the Holy Spirit is not in an individual that person is not begotten by the seed of God so he is not a child of God. In John 8: 42 Christ said to the Jews: “If God were your father ye would love me”. Then in verse 44 (John 8: 44) Christ continued: “Ye are of your father the devil”. See also 1 John 3: 11. “There is one Spirit” and so the Spirit of Christ is the same Spirit of God (Eph. 4: 4).
